10 Must-Have Vegan Supplements for Women

Need vegan supplements? iHerb and HealthyGirl Kitchen have you covered!

I teamed up with iHerb for this blog post and I am so excited to share my experience with you.

I have to be honest, ordering my fave vegan supplements from iHerb was SO easy and made my life so much simpler.

If you know me, you know that I am all about efficiency and getting all of my must-have supplements from one place saved me time, money and effort. I am super busy, and this saved me a trip to the health food store (score!).

iHerb – all the details!

iHerb carries over 30,000 natural products and ships to over 150 countries.

Don’t worry about your vitamins and health foods being soiled on their way to your house, iHerb orders are shipped from climate-controlled distribution centers to ensure the quality of their products.

I hate when websites and companies have poor customer service. It is beyond helpful that iHerb offers customer service 24 hours a day/7 day a week in 10 different languages. They gotcha covered.

It can also be super difficult to find vegan supplements in the drug store (they all have gelatin – ugh). I was super pleased to find such a wide variety of vegan friendly supplements on the iHerb website.

As you know, I am a plant-based health coach and I strongly recommend eating a whole foods plant-based vegan diet. However, adding supplements into your daily routine to enhance your diet is great way to optimize your wellness.

I did all of the dirty work for you and I have compiled a list of all the essential must-have vegan supplements that women can benefit from.

Maca Root Powder

I can’t say enough good things about maca, it is a total superfood! Maca can be used to balance your hormones naturally. Whether you are menopausal or want to decrease PMS symptoms, I recommend adding maca into your diet.

Simply add 1-2 tsp into your smoothie or into your oatmeal for a natural hormone balancing superfood boost.

I notice such a big difference when I am taking maca, my breakouts calm down, my cramps seem do not last as long and my periods are lighter.

Echinacea + Reishi Shiitake Maitake Mushroom Extract

Prevention is key. When it comes to fighting diseases or just fighting the common cold you always want to be proactive. Instead of waiting until you’re sick to take action, supplementing with echinacea and mushroom extract daily is a great way to boost your immune system and prevent the dreaded cold or flu.

I seriously swear by this combination – echinacea in particular has stopped me from getting sick more times than I can count. It is definitely on the top of the list for the 10 must-have vegan supplements for women.

Reishi mushroom is especially potent and packs a powerful punch in preventing + treating asthma, bronchitis, influenza, swine flu, and avian flu.

Turmeric

The active ingredient in turmeric, curcumin, is a potent anti-inflammatory and is one of my holy-grail supplements. All diseases stem from chronic inflammation and reducing harmful inflammation in the body is integral for maintaining your health.

You can cook with turmeric powder but I prefer to take a supplement to ensure I am getting a sufficient serving. The turmeric supplement from the brand youtheory includes black pepper, which allows your body to properly absorb the turmeric.

Other benefits of taking turmeric include increased brain function, Alzheimer’s prevention, anti-aging, reduced risk of heart disease, cancer prevention, and the treatment of arthritis.

B12 and Vitamin D3

If you are vegan and eating a plant-centered diet, the one vitamin that you NEED to supplement with is B12, it is a non-negotiable. B12 supports the functioning of our central nervous system. It actually comes from bacteria in soil but because the nutrients in our soils have depleted over time, we don’t receive sufficient b12 from the food we eat.

I really like the b12 from DEVA – it’s super affordable and it gets the job done.

Most people do not receive adequate D3 and many D3 supplements are derived from a sheep (aka not vegan)!

Supplement with this vegan D3 to support bone health. This is especially important for women because we are prone to osteoporosis.

Spirulina

Get your greens! Enhance your daily routine with some organic spirulina.

Sometimes I add spirulina powder into my smoothie but when I am not having a green smoothie I simply just take a spirulina supplement like this one.

Spirulina is filled with antioxidants, protein, iron, vitamin A, vitamin K, B complex, and contains 10 times more beta carotene than carrots (OMG). It helps to rid the body of harmful bacteria like E. coli and helps to promote a healthy bacteria balance in the gut. This allows for better digestion and increased bowel regularity.

One of the greatest benefits of spirulina is it’s ability to purge the body of toxic heavy metal build-up which helps to prevent neurological diseases like Alzheimer’s.

Supergreens Powder

Wheatgrass, kale, moringa, spirulina

Boost your daily smoothie in the morning by adding this organic supergreens powder. Even if you are eating a healthy vegan diet, I find that most of my clients are not getting enough greens.

If you find it hard to eat a ton of veggies, add this greens powder to ensure you get your greens!

This greens powder has a nutrient dense combination of wheat grass, kale, moringa and spirulina. Greens like these contribute to increased energy, detoxifying the body, reducing inflammation, lowering cholesterol, lowering blood sugar, and flooding your system with antioxidants.

EstroSense

Estrosense promotes healthy estrogen balance during PMS or menopause (yes please).

I recently decided to stop taking my birth control, as I didn’t like the idea of synthetic hormones controlling my cycle.

Along with stopping my birth control I noticed my skin breaking out more than usual, heavier periods, weird sleep patterns and increased cramping.

In addition to taking maca powder, I decided to start taking this all-natural herbal hormone balancing supplement. So far, so good! This supplement has ingredients like broccoli, turmeric, green tea, rosemary, and milk thistle.

My only negative feedback about this product is that it has a very strong smell, however, it has truly helped balance my hormones so it’s worth it.

Digestive Plant Enzymes

Digestive enzymes help to support healthy digestion.

The number one complaint I hear from my vegan clients is that they suffer from really bad gas and bloating.

Unfortunately, the high fiber nature of the vegan diet can contribute to excess gas – especially in women! That is why I needed to include it in my list of 10 must-have vegan supplements for women.

Women have colons that are 10 centimeters longer than men’s colons. This creates more room in the digestive tract for trapped gas and uncomfortable bloating. If you are particularly sensitive to bloating + gas, consider taking a digestive enzyme with every meal.
